It's fairly straight forward.

For every post/thread you make you are given an amount (varies on the section and whether you're creating a topic or just posting) of points that can be used for advertisements. To purchase an advertisement you need at least 10 reputation and the 100 points to buy them. If you donate you are automatically given 1,000 points.
